SUMMARY:Canceled: Texas Resilience 2020
DESCRIPTION:This conference will provide a platform for Texas communities and organizations to come together and share experiences\, opportunities\, tools\, resources\, and knowledge to build a more climate-resilient Texas. Communities across Texas often confront the stresses of climate change\, inequality\, and aging infrastructure as well as disasters such as heat waves\, wildfires\, drought\, and floods. Building resilience empowers Texans to invest in their communities in ways that allows them to emerge in a stronger position after tough times and enable citizens to live better in good times. Texas Resilience 2020 will take place May 20-21\, 2020 in Austin\, TX.   \nCall for Proposals FINAL Sponsorhip Letter Final

SUMMARY:Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The 45th CDPW will will focus on four major themes\, with an emphasis on climate prediction\, monitoring\, attribution\, diagnostics\, and service delivery related to: \nMonitoring\, attribution\, and prediction of climate variability across spatial and temporal scales\, with an emphasis on the forecast attribution of climate anomalies in dynamical forecast systems. Topics will also include diagnostics and attribution of extreme events worldwide\, and Arctic impact on mid-latitude variability and predictability.\nApplications of modern technologies including GIS\, machine learning\, and software development at Sub-seasonal to Seasonal (S2S) time scales.\nImproving methods for regional applications of climate forecast information for disruptive weather and water events\, communication practices for S2S impact-based decision support services\, and assessment of the economic value of climate forecast information.\nPrediction of hydroclimate over the western United States\, including flooding precipitation\, drought/pluvial\, snowfall and snowpack\, and other variables related to water resources. \n\n\nWe encourage you to submit abstracts through July 31\, 2020. Both abstract submission and registration are free. The change to a virtual format is likely to result in fewer oral presentations\, though we are pursuing virtual options to replace the poster sessions and lightning talks. SUMMARY:Southern Plains Climate Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The climate is rapidly changing. But how will these changes affect global weather patterns\, especially in winter? This is one area of research that Dr. Jason Furtado\, an Assistant Professor for the School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma\, explores with his team. This presentation will look at how increasing temperatures in the arctic play a crucial role in contributing to more extreme winter weather events and the impacts this could have in the south-central region\, the United States and globally. \nDr. Furtado’s research focuses on large-scale climate dynamics\, including coupled systems (e.g.\, stratosphere-troposphere coupling\, Arctic-midlatitude connections\, El Niño dynamics\, and predictability) and dynamical interactions between the tropics and the extratropics. His work features analysis and evaluation of observations and modeling experiments\, particularly coupled climate model simulations. \nRegister here: \nhttps://oklahoma.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUrcOygrjMrG9SHziNbqiDWcBU1q-LhdN_5

SUMMARY:Hot Science at Home: The Fate of Food
DESCRIPTION:What will we eat in a bigger\, hotter and smarter world? Climate models show that global crop production will continue to decline due to drought\, heat\, and flooding. Meanwhile\, the world’s population is expected to grow another 30 percent by midcentury. So how\, really\, will we feed nine billion people sustainably in the coming decades? Hear how Amanda Little spent three years traveling through a dozen countries and as many U.S. states in search of answers to that question. \nTime: 7:00 – 7:40 p.m. CST \nThe event includes an interactive Q&A session with Amanda Little! \nLearn More here.

SUMMARY:Nortwest CASC: Webinar - Managing Post-Fire\, Climate-Induced Vegetation Transition
DESCRIPTION:Warmer\, drier and longer fire seasons in the Northwest have led to larger and more frequent wildfires. These changes in fire activity\, combined with warmer and drier post-fire conditions\, have in turn led to growing concern that in some areas of the Northwest\, particularly in forests and shrublands east of the Cascade Range\, existing plant communities may face difficulty regrowing and persisting following fire. Some of these communities may ultimately transition to different vegetation types – for example\, from forests or shrublands to grasslands – impacting the ecological\, economic and cultural services provided by these ecosystems. In this webinar\, Northwest CASC supported researchers will present a review of current knowledge and practice around the emerging climate impact of post-fire vegetation transitions in the Northwest. This synthesis is the result of a working group process that convened natural resource managers and scientists from Northwest Tribes\, universities\, the non-profit and private sectors\, and federal\, state and local governments to collaboratively review what is currently known (and unknown) about managing climate-driven\, post-fire vegetation transitions in the Northwest. \nMarch 11 at 3:00 pm EST \nLEARN MORE HERE
