SUMMARY:Interpreting Climate Change Virtual Course
DESCRIPTION:The Interpreting Climate Change virtual course provides an overview of the practical knowledge and skills that will enable interpreters to develop effective\, engaging programming for both natural and cultural sites. Participants will consider a range of engagement techniques such as audience-centered interpretation\, facilitated dialogue\, skills for dealing with controversy\, and presenting multiple perspectives. These and other techniques will be applied to an overview of climate science and audience research. Participants will engage in group discussions to share best practices\, build confidence\, and identify meaningful site connections. \n  \nThis training is aimed at interpretation and education practitioners and supervisors – from both natural and cultural sites – who are presenting and/or developing climate change programming at their sites\, or are interested in doing so but aren’t sure how to proceed. Interested employees from other career fields and other agencies are also welcome to apply on a space available basis. Preference is given to NPS employees.

This team represents the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center and serves tribal communities in partnership with others in Oklahoma\, New Mexico\, Texas\, and Louisiana. \nThe workshop will feature climate change science and communication resources including citizen science\, NASA resources\, collaborative projects\, and youth activities – all chosen for their specific relevance to practitioners in this geographic region. DESCRIPTION:The 45th CDPW will will focus on four major themes\, with an emphasis on climate prediction\, monitoring\, attribution\, diagnostics\, and service delivery related to: \nMonitoring\, attribution\, and prediction of climate variability across spatial and temporal scales\, with an emphasis on the forecast attribution of climate anomalies in dynamical forecast systems. Topics will also include diagnostics and attribution of extreme events worldwide\, and Arctic impact on mid-latitude variability and predictability.\nApplications of modern technologies including GIS\, machine learning\, and software development at Sub-seasonal to Seasonal (S2S) time scales.\nImproving methods for regional applications of climate forecast information for disruptive weather and water events\, communication practices for S2S impact-based decision support services\, and assessment of the economic value of climate forecast information.\nPrediction of hydroclimate over the western United States\, including flooding precipitation\, drought/pluvial\, snowfall and snowpack\, and other variables related to water resources. \n\n\nWe encourage you to submit abstracts through July 31\, 2020. Both abstract submission and registration are free. The change to a virtual format is likely to result in fewer oral presentations\, though we are pursuing virtual options to replace the poster sessions and lightning talks. The agenda will still feature invited speakers and discussion sessions.

DESCRIPTION:Want a stronger community of climate science communicators in your region? \n  \nBecome an Earth to Sky Regional Leader! \n  \nIn support of our community’s interest in a regional approach for climate communication\, Earth to Sky (ETS) has begun developing Regional Communities of Practice in Climate Communication. \n  \nEach is led by a Regional Leadership Team that has received a week’s training at an ETS Academy\, followed by ongoing mentoring and support from ETS Central Leadership.  \n  \nThe next Earth to Sky Academy will be held January 25-29\, 2021 at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center\, Greenbelt MD.   \n  \nThe Academy is tuition-free. \n  \nTeam applications are due August 31\, 2020.   \n  \nThe Earth to Sky Academy is intended for teams of experienced informal educators and climate communication leaders who have a strong commitment to the ETS partnership and to furthering climate literacy within their respective regions. SUMMARY:Southern Plains Climate Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The climate is rapidly changing. But how will these changes affect global weather patterns\, especially in winter? This is one area of research that Dr. Jason Furtado\, an Assistant Professor for the School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma\, explores with his team. This presentation will look at how increasing temperatures in the arctic play a crucial role in contributing to more extreme winter weather events and the impacts this could have in the south-central region\, the United States and globally. \nDr. Furtado’s research focuses on large-scale climate dynamics\, including coupled systems (e.g.\, stratosphere-troposphere coupling\, Arctic-midlatitude connections\, El Niño dynamics\, and predictability) and dynamical interactions between the tropics and the extratropics.
